Trees and World Literatures in English
In this presentation, we would like to share our research on literary human-arboreal and eco-social entanglements. We will explore a few texts from the Anglophone World, which we discuss in our co-edited volume Trees in Literatures and the Arts. Humanarboreal Perspectives in the Anthropocene (Lexington Press, 2021). Our talk illustrates how humans and trees cooperate in co-evolutionary ecosystems, how trees can become exempla of democratic behavior and therefore function as social models, and, finally, how gender becomes relevant in Ovidian-like transmutations of humans into trees.
Carmen Concilio is a Professor of English and Postcolonial Literature at the University of Turin, Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Modern Cultures. Among other grants, she was the recipient of the Canada-Italy Innovation Award, in 2021. Among her recent publications is Imagining Ageing. Representations of Age and Aging in Anglophone Literature (2018). She co-edited the volume Antroposcenari. Storie, paesaggi, ecologie (2018) and Trees in Literature and the Arts (2021) with Daniela Fargione. Her research spans the environmental humanities, migration studies, and urban studies, at the intersection with postcolonial Anglophone literature and art.
Daniela Fargione received her Ph.D. from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst (USA). She teaches American Literatures at the University of Turin. Her research includes the environmental humanities, the literature, music, and photography of the Americas, and literary translation. She has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and visiting fellowships both in Italy and the UK. In addition to collaborations with Professor Concilio, she recently co-edited ContaminAzioni ecologiche. Cibi, nature e culture (2015), with Serenella Iovino.
